Riverrun on the Encyclical Fides et Ratio as an Approach to Modernism in the Contemporary Magisterium

Fides et Ratio (Faith and Reason) is an encyclical promulgated by Pope Saint John Paul II on 14 September 1998 which addresses the relationship between faith and reason. This encyclical argues compellingly, and with the authority of papal magisterium, that faith and reason are essential to one another. Most interestingly, there’s an extended section in this encyclical that riverrun will argue is a contemporary and updated treatment of the Church’s attack on theological modernism. Riverrun argues at the encyclical not only renews the attack of Pope Saint Pius X against modernism but vastly improves that attack in a number of ways and gives to us an entire arsenal of conceptual tools whereby we can both identify more precisely than ever before this intellectual enemy and defeat it at its root.
